Waverley is a pre-1940 suburb on a ridge, and its plumbing behaves accordingly. Victorian terraces, Federation semis and heritage-listed houses still run the drainage they were built with: brittle vitrified clay under the yard, tired galvanised in the walls.

Clay doesn't fail gently. A joint opens, roots from the mature street trees find the damp, and the line packs solid somewhere between the bathroom and the boundary.
